Range Light at Southampton Harbour

The Marine Heritage Society and the Town of Saugeen Shores have been working with the Federal Government to divest the four lighthouses within the town to the municipality.

The preservation and upkeep of the lighthouses will be a joint effort and town recently presented Business Plans for the four - McNabb Point, Back Range, Front Range and a separate plan for Chantry Island Lighthouse will be prepared in the near future.

The object of the plans are to divest the lighthouses to the Town for protection.  The Federal Government has reviewed the plans and have subsequently requested a statement from the Municipal Heritage Committee that outlines the Committee's support for the divestiture of the lighthouses and to designate them as Heritage buildings.

The Committee, in fact, supported the preservation and divestiture of the lighthouses and also want to consider the same designation for the recent Stokes Bay Lighthouse now located at the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre in Southampton.

It also supports the protection of the four lighthouses and endorses the Town's wishes to divest them and to designate them as heritage buildings under the Ontario Heritage Act.
