The final events of the 2011 golfing season were held recently at Chippewa Golf and Country Club. On Sept 24, the Men held their Closing tournament, a four-man scramble format in which one player from each of four handicap groups are teamed up in a best-ball game. Each player had to contribute at least three drives during the eighteen holes.
In first place, with a ten under par score of 62, was the team captained by Brian Acton with Steve Santin, Hugh Morrison Jr. and Charlie Schmalz. This team was awarded first place after a putt-off with the team captained by Freeman Coblenz, also carding a ten under 62. Coblenz’s team of Ron Caudle, Paul Holk and Wade Jackson took second place, having lost out in the putt-off.
Frank Yakabuski and his three-man team consisting of Steve Webb and Mike Fitzmaurice took third spot, only one stroke behind the winning scores with a 63. In fourth place, with a score of 64, was the team captained by Derryl Urstadt with Rick Denomy, Dan Coblenz and Jim Norwood. Rounding out the prizes, in fifth spot, also with a 64, was the team captained by Chesley native Rob Beitz with Dan Wannamaker, Bill Hatt and John Upper.
On Sept 27, the Senior Men held a scramble event to close out their season. Due to inclement weather, the eighteen-hole event was shortened to nine holes, with the team captained by Lou Bezaire taking first place with a score of two under par, 33. Bezaire’s team consisted bo Bill Thomson, Peter Welford and Terry Morgan. In second place, with a score of 34, was the team captained by Mike Pitzen with Barrie Robson, Jim Connelly and Art Eby. All of the other teams were tied with even par round of 35, and retrogression resulted in the team captained by Terry Bailey with Jiggs Maynard, Don Foell and Doug Oatman winning third place.
And so ends another great season of golf at the new and improved Chippewa Golf and Country Club.
