Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario will be holding its first Life in Balance Young-Onset Parkinson’s Workshop, at the Delta London Armouries Hotel, Saturday, Oct. 22, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event is proudly sponsored by Simple Financial.

The workshop is designed to bring together people who are affected by Young-Onset Parkinson’s in the Southwestern Ontario region and will provide information and support. The emphasis is on everyday strategies that will help people achieve a better quality of life with Parkinson’s.

Workshop speakers and topics will include: Jennifer Barlow (Associate Lawyer, Lerner and Associates) Understanding Your Rights as an Employee; Patrycja Birbaum (Social Worker, Clinical Neurosciences, LHSC) Sexual Relationships and Parkinson’s: Understanding Changes; Christopher Burton (Personal Financial Coach, Simple Financial) Planning Your Financial Future; and, Mike Ravenek (PhD. Student, UWO) Information Needs for Individuals with Young Onset Parkinson’s.

This is the first time that Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario has been able to offer an educational workshop specific to the needs of the Young-Onset Parkinson’s population in the region, furthering our mandate to enhance support services throughout the region.

There are nearly 100,000 Canadians who suffer from this neurodegenerative disorder that causes symptoms such as tremor, slowness and stiffness, impaired balance, and rigidity of the muscles. This number is expected to double by 2016, to more than 200,000 people.

Once thought to be a disease exclusive to the elderly, one in 10 people will be under the age of 40 at the time of diagnosis. There is currently no known cause or cure for Parkinson’s.
