I have co-ordinated the volunteers for Doors Open Kincardine at Knox Church in Kincardine for the past three years. I wrote the 2011 date on my calendar in October, 2010.

In July of 2011, I began to wonder why I had not heard anything from Kincardine Tourism (organizer of the event) because I knew that if we were to be involved, I needed to contact volunteers.

I went to the Doors Open Ontario website and learned that Kincardine was listed in the booklet. I then went to the Tourist Information to see if Knox Church was to be used this year. Organizers finally E-mailed Knox on Aug. 16 stating that the church was required. I contacted members of Knox to see if they would act as greeters. Within two days, I had 15 volunteers.

I received an E-mail from Kincardine Tourism saying there would be a meeting later to distribute material - I was asked to name dates that would not work from me.

On Oct. 3, I received a notice of a meeting for Oct. 4. By that time, I had another commitment for Oct. 4. I also indicated it was too late to get another representative from among my volunteers.

I got an E-mail the morning of Oct. 4 saying the meeting had been cancelled because there were not enough people to attend so the materials would be hand-delivered to each site.

Finally, on Oct. 8, I received an an E-mail informing me that the event had been cancelled. Kincardine Tourism can accuse the community of not wanting to support this event but the truth is organizers did not try hard enough or soon enough.

Past experience, tells me that many people from many places plan well in advance to visit Doors Open. Some are just out to enjoy the countryside. Others are looking for a place to relocate. Cancellation of this event is a costly lost opportunity.
