A new ATM machine has been purchased by the South Bruce Grey Health Centre - Kincardine hospital auxiliary and has been installed in the registration area of the Kincardine hospital.

The machine reads “Welcome to Kincardine Hospital Auxiliary ATM” with the user fee set at $1.50 for each transaction. Every time you use the machine, you are supporting the auxiliary and your local hospital.

That was one of the news items the auxiliary discussed during its meeting Sept. 28.

President Kaye MacDonald opened the meeting with the Auxiliary Prayer and welcomed 20 members back, after a well-deserved summer break.

The auxiliary Tag Day fund-raiser was held at the end of June and we thank the community for its generous support. The volunteers raised more than $4,700 at the various locations in spite of the rain storms. Thanks also to the stores for providing some indoor shelter from this wet weather.

Over the summer, four very comfortable outdoor-type chairs were purchased for the entrance to the Kincardine hospital, along with two side tables. The tables were painted and refinished by Wayne Zettler to match the wrought-iron frames of the chairs. Thanks Wayne for the terrific work! We now have very attractively-matched tables and chairs.

The Gift Shop Christmas Boutique is set for two days: Friday, Nov. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a Bake Sale and Tea; and Saturday, Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Boutique only.

Nancy Potter and Tracy Robinson have already received most of the inventory for this event with lots of ideas for Christmas gifts and decorations. Be sure to mark your calendars. Please keep in mind that we are always in need of new volunteers to help staff our gift shop, next to the cafeteria, in the hospital.

Anne Nicolson, our Student Volunteer Co-ordinator, had 15 students for the summer. They donated 258.75 hours of their time helping out by assisting staff and patients.
The Student Volunteer Mini-Conference is being held Friday, Nov. 18, with an informative line-up of guest speakers.

Anne was extremely proud to announce Nathan Robertson won the 2011 Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario (HAAO) Student Award for small hospitals (100 beds or less) at the provincial level.

Nathan has accumulated an impressive 236 hours of volunteering over four years and will be presented with the $1,000 scholarship in Toronto at the Royal York on Nov. 5 during the Student Volunteer convention. At present, Nathan is continuing his education at the University of Oshawa. Congratulations, Nathan for achieving this recognition.

Oct. 5, Kaye MacDonald, Lois Hackett and Betty Johnstone attended the HAAO – Central Regional Conference in Wiarton. Kaye was presented with a cheque for $250 for another student volunteer, Jessica Brown. Jessica has accumulated 126.75 volunteer hours since joining the program in 2009. Jessica is continuing her education in the nursing program at Trent University in Peterborough.

We are very proud of these two student award winners from the Kincardine Hospital Auxiliary Student Volunteer Program, under Anne Nicolson's leadership. Anne's dedication and the number of hours this wonderful lady contributes are truly amazing.

Kaye MacDonald attended the Kincardine District Secondary School Commencement Friday, Oct. 7, to hand out our Bursary Award of $400 to Maica Glipo. Maica is continuing her education in the Faculty of Science at the University of Waterloo.

The Auxiliary is in the process of purchasing a larger refrigerator for the nurses’ station. The existing refrigerator is too small and it also has a freezer department which they do not need or use. The new one will be a full refrigerator with no freezer department.

Kaye MacDonald thanked Chris Gravel and Marilynn Buffo, our social committee, for providing the delightful tray of goodies and coffee.

Our next meeting is Oct. 26, 7 p.m., at the hospital in the classroom.
