The University of Lethbridge (Alberta) Pronghorns have won the CIS university women's hockey Great Lakes Challenge held Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine.

Tournament director Josh Howald said the event, sponsored by Superheat FGH, saw the arena roughly two-thirds full for each of the six games. "We heard nothing but rave reviews on the calibre of hockey," he said. "The players and families greatly enjoyed the billeting experience and it seems as if everything was a success."

The Lethbridge Pronghorns went a perfect 3-0 in the three-day event, clinching the points title with an exciting 2-1 win over the University of Regina Cougars Sunday afternoon (Oct. 2).

Paige Wheeler broke a scoreless tie in the second period to give the Cougars, coached by Kincardine native Sarah (Howald) Hodges, a 1-0 lead. But the Pronghorns drew even on a great-looking solo rush by Shelby Ballendine.

Minutes later, Kirsten Reeves of the Pronghorns beat a defender to the outside and scored the game-winner with less than six minutes left in the game. University of Lethbridge goaltender Crystal Patterson made some huge saves in the dying seconds to preserve the win.

Patterson was named player of the game, while Wheeler finished as the overall tournament scoring leader with one goal and four assists.

Guelph 2, York 1

Kandace Charbonneau scored with less than three minutes to play to lift the University of Guelph Gryphons to a 2-1 win over the York University Lions and into a three-way tie for second place at the CIS Great Lakes Challenge.

Chloe Milano gave York University a 1-0 lead in the first period, scoring from Andrea Joyce. Erin Small of Guelph tied the game with a third-period tally from Jessica Pinkerton and Michelle Sabourin, setting the stage for Charbonneau’s winner. Parked out front, she banged a rebound past York goalie Sydney McMurter at 2:49.

Guelph goaltender Stephanie Nehring was outstanding in this contest, and stopped a breakaway chance at the buzzer to give Guelph its first win of the tournament. She was named player of the game.

Friday games saw Lethbridge beat Guelph, 5-2.

Jenna-Marie Durnin scored twice and Shelby Ballendine had three assists to lead Lethbridge to the win.

Erica Williams, Amy Van Buskirk and Katie McPhedran also scored for the Pronghorns, giving the team four points - three for the win and one for scoring five goals.

Erin Small set up both Guelph goals, scored by Brittney Crawford and Tamara Bell.

York 4, Regina 2

Four different players scored for the York Lions in a 4-2 win over Regina. Chloe Milano, Navraj Rai, Kristie Wilson and Jamie Endrizzi notched goals for York, while Stephanie Sawchuk and Rianne Wight replied for the Cougars.

Stephanie Dovaston of York had two assists in the win.

Saturday games saw Lethbridge down York, 4-1.

Kim Ramcharan gave York a 1-0 lead just minutes into this contest, but the Pronghorns scored four unanswered goals and remained undefeated.

Amy Van Buskirk scored once and set up another Lethbridge goal, while Megan Bailey had the game-winner in the second period. Jenna-Marie Durnin made it 3-1 in the third and Chelsea Minor sealed things with an empty-net goal.

Leanne Gerwing had the win in goal for the Pronghorns which went on to challenge the Canada West rival, Regina, Sunday.

Regina 4, Guelph 1

Rianne Wight scored twice and Paige Wheeler had three assists in the Regina Cougars' 4-1 defeat of York University.

Gina Campbell and Wight each scored in the opening two minutes of the second period, following a scoreless first. Megan Finlay made it 2-1 on a York powerplay, but Wight's second put the Cougars up 3-1. Kendra Finch put the game away with a third-period goal from Shalyn Cowan.
