G. C. Huston Public School in Southampton is the 'little school that could' when it comes to new initiatives that teach students about the environment and how they can make a difference. The school, adjacent to the world-class Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre, and overlooking historic Fairy Lake (Little Lake) in the centre of the town, is taking the opportunity to teach young students about the environment that is literally in the school's backyard. The school 'The Great Hawk Walk' on Friday when students staged a 24-hour enviro-walk-a-thon to kick room. The day was also a 'Pajama Spirit Day' with school staff, parents and students spending the day in a variety of pajamas and holding a sleepover.
Crafts take concentration Classes walked around Fairy Lake throughout the day and, then in the evening, special activities were organized. Although heavy rains and wind prevented the planned outdoor campfire, it didn't dampen the spirits of those attending. Early Saturday morning, everyone was treated to a pancake breakfast and a final walk around the lake.
Principal Dan Russell The outdoor classroom will be a dome shape with seating for an entire classroom and openings on four sides. On one side, it will overlook Fairy Lake and, on the other, overlook the Community Garden.
