In light of the BWDSB accommodation review into the future of schools in Hanover and Chesley, we believe the funding formula set out by the Ontario Ministry of Education does not work in rural Ontario.

It may work in Toronto or Hamilton, but it does not always work in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound. Nobody should have to lose their school which is the lifeblood of any rural community. This process should not have to pit one community against another.

The Chesley District High School is rated by the Fraser Institute as one of the top five in the province. CDHS has the only high school agricultural curriculum in the riding. A riding where agriculture is the largest industry.

Chesley should keep its high school, albeit it will be smaller than the average. Quality should trump quantity. Bigger is not always better.

While we sympathize with the tough decision before the Board members and realize that there will be some changes that have to take place, it is still clear that they have the power to make a decision that is balanced and with every community coming out a winner. The educational needs, as well as the overall well-being of students are part of the criteria to be used in making a decision.

We trust the well-being of all students, and the overall health and sustainability of the community will be taken into consideration
