A larger-than-usual group of members and friends met at Pine River for the October meeting of the Reid’s Corners Women’s Institute to hear Huron-Kinloss mayor Mitch Twolan who was the guest speaker.

A project that he is very excited about is the new Bruce Botanical Food Gardens to be constructed on 30 acres of property the municipality owns on Park Street East in Ripley. Already the wheels are in motion and it is hoped that a Trillium Foundation grant will be forthcoming.

Huron-Kinloss council is doing everything it can to bring natural gas to the area.

Members pointed out several local road safety concerns but were told that almost all were on public works superintendent Hugh Nichol’s to-do list.

The members commended Twolan and the council for their septic tank re-inspection program, the algae removal and their hard work in trying to control the giant bamboo-like weed called Australis Phragmites on the beaches. If you are unfamiliar with this invasive weed just drive north on Boiler Beach Road. You will know you are in Kincardine when you see the giant weeds to your left on the shore.

Twolan was thanked by convener Nancy Copeland.

President Judy Snobelen announced that the Alzheimer Society tea realized more than $500. It was decided to support the CKNX Health Care Heroes Radiothon by donating $400 to the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation and $200 to the Wingham hospital foundation.

A delicious lunch was served by Bernice Mitchell and Barb Messenger.
