A committee will investigate proposed renovations to the Whitney Crawford Community Centre in Tiverton.
He said the washrooms located between the community centre and the annex (on the north side) are not adequate to support the annex capacity of 800 people. Consequently, users of the hall have had to bring in portable toilets for events. The north-side washrooms also don't meet accessibility standards, said McTeer. Potential rentals have been lost because there is no dishwasher in the kitchen And the current kitchen layout is not large enough to support adding a dishwasher. "We tried to get these washrooms renovated before and now, we're resurrecting that project," said McTeer. "We've had difficulty getting a caterer for events at the community centre because we don't have a dishwasher," he said, adding that a further problem is that the current drainage system will not accommodate new washrooms and a dishwasher. McTeer requested a joint committee between the community centre board and the municipality to investigate options for expansion or renovation to correct the problems. "We need to look at all the possibilities and the costing for them," he said, "and then present options by preference to council. There are funds available in the community centre capital account to fund the development of options, he said. Once a proposal is supported by council, the board could move forward with grant applications to help fund the project, said McTeer. "We would also fund-raise in the community, and we would appreciate some council budget commitment for any financial shortfall." "Thank you for bringing this forward," said councillor Maureen Couture. "We need to make this building accessible to as many people as possible." She said the Trillium Foundation currently has a grant program specifically geared toward accessibility, and for smaller projects in the cost range of $15,000 to $20,000. "If you apply, you have a good chance of receiving the grant." Couture noted there is $22,000 in the reserve fund for the community centre.

"So, what's the timeline for this?" asked deputy mayor Anne Eadie. "We expect it will take one year, maybe two," said McTeer. Councillor Kenneth Craig said McTeer brought these concerns to him as parks and recreation policy chairman, and recreation director Karen Kieffer. And they told him to bring it to council for consideration. "Jim (McTeer) is a steadfast worker in the Tiverton community," said Craig. "I would be happy to work with the committee to bring forth a proposal. We have a lot of smart people in the community with good suggestions. The Whitney Crawford Community Centre is due for a significant facelift." McTeer said he expected a committee of about four to six people, including some council members and some from the public. Craig and councillor Mike Leggett will represent the municipality, with Kieffer and chief building official Michele Barr as staff resource. The remaining members of the committee will come from the public. Council endorsed this decision later in the meeting. Scrolling stops when you move your mouse inside the scroll area.
