Unfair to say there are no young people volunteering in town

To the Editor:

In response to the comments that there are no young volunteers in Kincardine, I have to agree with Alice (Paisley  Ellis), I too was quite offended to read that there are no young volunteers in Kincardine.

Our family and many under-50 friends do quite a bit of volunteering, including minor soccer, hockey, Air Cadets, summer programs, blood donor clinics and many other programs around town. Each one of our high school students puts in 40-hours-plus as part of his/her credits. In fact, my daughter has doubled her hours.

If you really believe there are no volunteers, go out to any one of the minor sports programs in Kincardine throughout the year, and you will be hard-pressed to find any adults over the age of 50! As for some of the programs that have folded due to the lack of volunteers, although it is unfortunate, perhaps that is because it is a program that does not fit today's demographics.

If people don't want to be involved, it is usually because they are not interested in it, and perhaps then the program is no longer valid in our community.

Yes, many of us do work long hours, have two parents working, and children going different directions every night involved in many programs. So it can be difficult to juggle, and yes we are thankful when some of the "older" volunteers are still involved to pick up the slack, but it is not fair to say that there are no young people helping out around our town.
