The 10th annual CKNX Health Care Heroes Radiothon has brought total raised by this event to almost $7-million for area hospital foundations.

The journey began in 2002 when the idea of putting a radiothon together was first laid out at the table.
Led by a small number of volunteers the "Million Dollar" Health Care Heroes Radiothon was created to support several local hospital foundations, spearheaded by the foundation in Mount Forest.

Over the years the dollar figure has grown and the evolution of the radiothon has taken shape, turning into the CKNX Health Care Heroes Radiothon.

This year, 16 hospital foundations put their resources together and, working with CKNX, again put together the eight-hour fund-raising event.

Saturday saw $666,443 raised during the radiothon.

"A big congratulations to our communities," says radiothon chairperson Heather Glenister of the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital in Goderich. "We wouldn't be here without them (donors). This year we have a chance to raise a total of $7-million for health care in our local community. Just looking around the room today, seeing everybody and seeing the familiar faces that have been here for 10 years volunteering, is very, very special."

She notes that people are looking for the radiothon now. "It's on their list of yearly donations. They're looking forward to hearing the stories. They're looking forward to hearing the reflections."

Donations are still being accepted up until the end of November. In Kincardine, contact the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation office at 519-396-3331, Ext. 342, to make a donation.
