It was old fashioned pond hockey at times with a dash of bad
blood thrown in but the end result was a 7-6 Saugeen Shores
shootout win over long-time rivals the Elora Rocks on Friday
night in WOAA Senior AA action.

Smooth skating 'Hawk Blake Underwood delivered the fatal
blow to the Rocks as he slipped the puck under Elora goalie
Blake Sinclair in the shootout.

Brent MacDermid also scored for the 'Hawks ripping a wrist
shot high to the glove side while Josh Carolan was flawless
stopping both Elora shooters to seal the win.

The 'Hawks came out flying in the first frame jumping out to a
3-0 lead with a pair of goals from MacDermid and one from
rookie Brendon Haefling who banged in a great feed from
Jordan Lang.

Elora, who looked overwhelmed in the early going
re-grouped and scored three straight goals to tie it up.

Elora got into penalty trouble in the second and the 'Hawks
regained the lead while enjoying a five-on-three man
advantage.

Captain Greg Thede blasted a slapshot from the point past
Sinclair to make it 4-3.

The rough stuff continued and the Rocks soon had the five-on-
three advantage and Elora's Brock Zinken scored his second
of the game to tie the score.

The Winterhawks newest acquisition, Greg Virgo, looked very
impressive showing good hustle, great hands and a hard shot.
Virgo was teamed up with Underwood and Jordan Lang and
the line was dangerous all night.

Curtis Johnston put the 'Hawks up 5-4 late in the second as
he buried a pass from Shane Bainbridge who showed a lot of
patience during a wild goal-mouth scramble. Bainbridge found
Johnston in the high slot and the Southampton sniper made no
mistake burying it high with Sinclair down and out.

The Rocks would not quit as Ryan Ford tied the score just
over a minute into the third.

Johnston scored his second of the game with a great shot
low to the stick side but Elora's Fraser Young scored to tie it
up as the 'Hawks struggled to clear their zone.

Overtime solved nothing despite both teams getting a chance
on the power play setting the stage for the shootout heroics.
