Four members of the Tiverton and District Lions Club were on hand at Kincardine Township-Tiverton Public School early Friday morning to wave goodbye to the Grade 7 students as they boarded the bus to the Bruce Grey Forest Festival.

The club sponsored the bus for the students to participate in the event, held at the Allan Park Conservation Area, located between Hanover and Durham.

The festival, held Oct. 18-20, saw about 900 Grade 7 students guided through 32 hands-on activities by approximately 240 secondary school students, community volunteers and industry professionals.

Activities focused on forest eco-systems and interactions, forest resource management and sustainability, bio-diversity and species at risk, climate change, and stewardship and conservation - all presented in a natural forest setting.

The forest festival was developed to complement and reinforce student classroom learning in the Ontario curriculum areas of science and technology and geography.

A survey held before and after the 2010 forest festival, revealed that the event had a dramatic impact on student knowledge and attitude toward forest resources. Educating young people about sustainable forest management practices and protection of the natural environment is the key to ensuring high-quality living standards for future generations.
