Although the crane lift had been booked, windy conditions on Monday morning made the delicate manoeuvre uncertain at first. It was the lift of the roof section onto the newly built construction of the Rail Trail 'historic based railway station' rest-stop in Port Elgin by Saugeen District Secondary School carpentry students. The experienced crane operator from Grey Bruce Construction however, felt that the move was safe and it was decided that the lift would go ahead. For the students, it was a hands-on experience and the first opportunity to be involved with a crane on a construction site. Recognizing the inexperience of students, teacher Bud Halpin demands that they learn all the rules, regulations and site etiquette on a construction site, not only through hands-on but also through thorough knowledge of the Provincial Safety Manual which students are required to have.

High-school students get hands-on experience with a crane lift "This has been an amazing project," says Joyce Scammell of the Rail Trail committee. "The entire community has been involved in this. Home Hardware has donated materials at cost as well as a $5,000 donation, CAW has brought in hot meals for the students, Tim Horton's brings over hot chocolate and tim-bits as well as hot lunches by committee members." "In addition," says teacher Bud Halpin, "Bruce Grey Construction has been phenomenal. They provided concrete forms and other materials in-kind that would have added up to seven or eight thousand dollars. The whole community has been behind this and the experience for the students has been priceless." Scrolling stops when you move your mouse inside the scroll area. You can click on the ads for more
