There were no surprises Saturday night when the undefeated Saugeen Shores Winterhawks visited the winless Walkerton Capitals.

Saugeen Shores improved to 7-0 on the WOAA Senior AA hockey season with a 6-1 win over the Capitals in Walkerton.

A shorthanded goal by Bryan Kazarian opened the scoring midway through the first. Walkerton native Ryan Fry made it 2-0 on a powerplay two minutes later, and the Winterhawks made it 3-0 before the break. Curtis Johnston, a former captain of the Walkerton Hawks, scored his team’s second shorthanded goal of the game late in the period.

Walkerton made it 3-1 when Cory MacDonald banged home a rebound in the slot. Tyler McAfee and Curt Robinson assisted on the goal, which gave Walkerton some life. But with four seconds left in the second period, Johnston scored his second of the night to make it 4-1 heading into the third.

Matt Turcotte and Jordan Lang each scored in the final five minutes to salt away a 6-1 final.

Walkerton will try to snap an ugly winless streak this Friday night at home. The Lucknow Lancers will be in town for an 8:30 p.m. start on Remembrance Day. It is Walkerton’s lone game of the weekend.
