Bruce Power has begun a $323-million investment in Unit 3 at the Bruce A generating station.

The unit was taken off-line Nov. 6 to begin a 160-day planned maintenance outage which will see the life of the unit extended through the end of the decade.

The outage campaign, which will see an influx of about 1,000 additional contractors on site and in the community for five months, is another example of Bruce Power’s commitment to operating the Bruce Nuclear site for generations.

“In the past 10 years we have refurbished and returned Units 3 and 4 to service, while our restart project (Units 1 and 2) is more than 90-per-cent complete, both of which are significant achievements,” said Duncan Hawthorne, president and chief executive officer of Bruce Power.

“This outage is another example of our long-term vision for Bruce Power. We plan to be here for a long time, providing safe, clean and reliable electricity to Ontario consumers and steady employment to local residents.

“Extending the life of Unit 3 is the next step in Bruce Power becoming the world’s largest nuclear facility, with the restart project coming to a close in the early part of 2012."
