Winterhawks Win Big Against Wolves!

The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks remain undefeated for the 2011/12 season thanks to an 8-1 win over the Ripley Wolves on Saturday night at The Plex.

The game started with a special ceremonial face-off as the Winterhawks welcomed Burgoyne native Major Kevin Grieve, who has served in the Royal Canadian Air Force since 1986. For those wondering, Major Kevin Grieve is the brother of Winterhawks' Head Coach Jim Grieve.

Once the game was underway, the 'Hawks left no doubt as to who was going to win this one.

Matt Turcotte opened the scoring after jamming the puck past Ripley netminder Kurt Edwards nearly eight minutes into the first period.

Not two minutes later, the 'Hawks struck again, this time Shawn Walker converted on a pass from Curtis Johnston to give the 'Hawks a 2-0 lead.

Nathan Gavey got Ripley on the board, finding the puck in the slot and firing it past Andrew Smith to cut the lead in half at the 11:37 mark of the first.

The 'Hawks quickly restored the two-goal lead just 18 seconds later when Nick Quaid scored what proved to be the game-winner on a set-up from James McHaig.

Some undisciplined play from Ripley late in the 1st gave the 'Hawks a two-man advantage and Greg Virgo tapped in a rebound with 13 seconds left in the period to send the 'Hawks to the dressing room up by a score of 4-1.

The goaltenders stole the show in the 2nd period, which kept the score at 4-1 heading to the 3rd.

Blake Underwood started the scoring in the 3rd, notching an unassisted goal at the 10:38 mark, which proved to open the floodgates.

Ryan Dudgeon scored twice just three minutes apart, which gave him the honours as the Crabby Joe's Player of the Game with two goals and one assist.

Underwood capped off the scoring at 15:49 to give the 'Hawks an 8-1 victory.  Andrew Smith and Josh Carolan combined to make 28 saves in goal for the win.

The Winterhawks head to Ripley next for a rematch on Friday night, and will be home the next night (Saturday, November 19th) to host the Mapleton-Minto 81s.
