Many may not realize that, behind, the scenes in communities throughout Grey and Bruce Counties, there is an organization that enhances the quality of daily life for seniors, adults with physical disabilities and adults recovering from illness or surgery and supports independence with a wide variety of services. Home & Community Support Services provide services such as transportation, day-away, housekeeping, visits and telephone reassurance and meals on wheels. The 'Meals on Wheels' program is one that provides both hot and frozen nutritious meals for those unable to acquire their own groceries, ensuring that they maintain a healthy lifestyle. In Southampton, Port Elgin and Kincardine, for instance, the hot meals are provided five days a week and consist of meat or fish, vegetables, bread, soup or salad and dessert, while frozen meals are delivered once a month. Jane Hoffstetter, who heads up the program, explains that the service enables people to maintain their independence in their own homes. "It answers a wide variety of needs and is depended on my many in the communities," she says. "For some, it's never having been able to have a driver's license, for others, it can be a result of losing one due to age. There are also those who may have lost a spouse and, while in grief, don't take the time to prepare their own meals. We also help those who are recovering from an illness or surgery at home by bringing healthy pre-prepared meals to the home. Special diets are also accommodated whenever possible and the meals are delivered by volunteers." |
