The Walkerton Capitals have notched their first win of the season.

After kicking off the WOAA Senior AA hockey campaign with eight consecutive losses, Walkerton posted a convincing 5-1 win over the Lucknow Lancers Friday night on home ice.

A shorthanded Caps team never trailed, and finally earned a win for goaltender Jason Hamilton, who was once again sharp.

We finally played a full 60 minutes,” said head coach Ryan Enright. “We’re better than our record; we just have to keep things going now.”

The game began well for Walkerton, as Jarris Ireland scored just three minutes into the match. Linemates Brandon Fraser and Josh Howald assisted on the goal, the lone tally of the first period.

Lucknow’s Duncan Minor tied the game 49 seconds into the second period with his team on a powerplay. Ryan Murley assisted on the goal.

But the Capitals scored three times to take a strong lead before the period ended. Chris Corbett notched the eventual game winner from Tim Dwinnell and Cory McDonald. The line connected again just 32 seconds later, and Dwinnell buried a snapper off the crossbar after taking a centring pass from McDonald. A powerplay goal by Adam Corbett made it 4-1 late in the second period. Greg Tiffen assisted on the goal.

And a goal by Fraser put this game out of reach for the Lancers early in the third period.

Walkerton will try to build on this win, and carry some momentum into a pair of games with the Shallow Lake Crushers this weekend.

Friday night, Walkerton will travel to Shallow Lake for an
8 p.m. start. The second game of this home-and-home is Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Walkerton Community Centre.
