The Reid’s Corners Women’s Institute met as usual on the third Wednesday at the Pine River United Church for the November meeting. The Opening Ode was sung, the Mary Stewart Collect recited and the Institute Grace sung. The members then enjoyed a bountiful lunch prepared by Sheila Murray and Bonnie Cole, carrying it to their places where they settled in for a travelogue on Newfoundland by Greta and Linden Thurber. These past two summers, the Thurbers have led a caravan of recreational vehicles (RVs) through Newfoundland. Linden had also sailed in to St. John’s harbour in his naval days. Their vivid accounts of the people and the scenery brought back many memories to those who had already been fortunate enough to visit there, while many of the rest were ready to put “Visit Newfoundland” on their bucket list. President Judy Snobelen conducted the business part of the meeting. The roll call, “Something interesting that you knew about Newfoundland,” was answered by 20 women. Members discussed what should be done for the Goderich relief. It was unanimously decided that since the UCW had donated five quilts, the Institute should instead give a monetary donation. Evelyn Elliott was thanked for laying the Institute wreath at the Ripley Cenotaph on Remembrance Day. The next meeting will be the usual organized potluck Christmas dinner and gift exchange.
