A powerplay goal lifted Durham to a 4-3 win over the Walkerton Capitals in WOAA Senior AA hockey action on the weekend.

Jim Hutchinson snapped a 3-3 tie, with 9:17 to play and the Thundercats on a man-advantage, Saturday night in Durham. It was Hutchinson’s second goal of the game.

Mike Huber opened the scoring for Walkerton from Brandon Fraser and Andy Cline, but Hutchinson scored his first shortly after. That goal was also a powerplay marker.

The only goal of the second period was a shorthanded effort by Durham’s Andrew Boyle. Kurt Aitchinson made it 3-1 less than a minute into the third period, but Walkerton cut the lead to 3-2 when a Dave McIntosh point shot found its way to the back of the net. Brady Houston then tied the game with a nice backhand deke after being sent in alone by Cline. Jason Hamilton, who was stellar in goal and made 37 stops, also earned an assist on the goal.

Hutchinson scored the game-winner less than two minutes later, and Troy Loucks shut the door in the Durham net. He made 32 saves for the win.

Friday night in Walkerton, the Capitals allowed five unanswered second-period goals in a 7-2 loss to the Shelburne Muskies. Walkerton actually led this game after the first period, but allowed four goals in the first six minutes of the second.

Curt Robinson scored from Tyler McAfee and Mitch Allen, but Darren McConnachie, Jordan Prevost, Dean Thompson, Trevor Van Alstine and Brad Horan each scored in the middle frame. Thompson and Horan each added a second goal in the third, while Greg Tiffin replied for Walkerton on a late powerplay.

Walkerton will play a pair of road games this weekend before returning to home ice Dec. 9 for a rematch against the Muskies. Friday night, the Caps will be in Port Elgin to take on the undefeated Saugeen Shores Winterhawks. Saturday, Walkerton will travel to Ripley to face the Wolves. Both games are set to begin at 8:30 p.m.
