The South Bruce Grey Health Centre - Kincardine hospital auxiliary held its special Christmas meeting, beginning at noon, at the Best Western Plus Governor's Inn, Kincardine.

It was the perfect setting, all glittering with Christmas decorations, for the 32 people in attendance to begin their holiday celebrations.

Our three honoured guests: Paul Davies, president and chief executive officer of the health centre; Kate Kincaid, director of patient care at the Kincardine site; and Jack Nancekivell, president of the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation, arrived early for the photo session of the presentation of our cheque in the amount of $18,000. A group photo of the 2012 executive was also taken.

Sylvia Abbot offered a very appropriate grace at the beginning of our delicious turkey buffet lunch and auxiliary president Kaye MacDonald introduced the three guests.

Kincaid expressed a huge thank you from the staff of the Kincardine hospital, not only for the financial support, but also the auxiliary’s very impressive presence in the way it supports the hospital and the community.

Davies was eager to point out that 2011 was a milestone year with the announcement of the redevelopment of the Kincardine hospital, and a possible start date of March 31, 2015. Two meetings have been held since the provincial election and the project is going forward at a normal pace. Davies thanked the auxiliary for the financial and moral support, closing with extended best wishes for the coming year and a Merry Christmas.

Nancekivell was happy to join us this year and also glad to have lunch with his wife, Karen. As treasurer of the Gift Shop, Karen devotes many hours looking after our money and bank account records for the Gift Shop. Jack gave us lots of encouragement, saying our group sets the tone with the three "Ts" - time, treasure and talents. The cheque for $18,000 was graciously accepted and on behalf of the foundation, Nancekivell thanked the auxiliary for adding to the quality of life in our community.

Next on the agenda, at this time of year, was the installation of the 2012 executive. Joan Ritchie gave the grand introduction of the following slate of officers: president Kaye MacDonald, past-president Lois Hackett, first vice-president Ginny Ross, secretary/press reporter Betty Johnstone, and treasurer Wilma Manary. Mary Lou McKee was honoured to conduct the installation ceremonies, followed with the presentation of beautiful delicate pink carnations.

In Gift Shop convener Nancy Potter’s absence, Karen Nancekivell read Nancy’s report. The Christmas Boutique, held Nov. 4 and 5, was a great success and Nancy expressed thanks to everyone who helped in any way. Special thanks went to Tracy Robinson who works very hard with Nancy; the hospital staff who help set up the rooms and clean up, and support us throughout the year; and last, but not least, to all the volunteers who help in the Gift Shop.

Be sure to mark your calendars - Friday, Dec. 2, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is Staff Appreciation Day. Hot cider and treats will be served with a 20-per-cent discount in the Gift Shop. Please tell your friends and family, this sale is for everyone!

Anne Nicolson, student volunteer co-ordinator, attended the Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario (HAAO) Student Volunteer Convention in Toronto Nov. 5 along with Nathan Robertson’s parents. Nathan was awarded a $1,000 HAAO scholarship at the regional level and was unable to attend.

Nov. 18, Anne conducted an outstanding Student Volunteer Conference at the hospital with eight of her volunteers attending. The impressive list of speakers included were Kate Kincaid, Roberta Telford, South Bruce OPP constable Kevin Martin, Christie Graham, Kaye MacDonald, Mike McKechnie, Marnie Wintemute and Dr. John Engle. We are very proud to be associated with Anne and her dedicated work giving these young people an introduction to the health care field.

Sylvia Abbot has graciously accepted, once again, the role of heading our committee for the 2012 Christmas Tour of Homes. Sylvia’s past experience and organizational skills are very much appreciated and needed. This is the auxiliary’s biggest fund-raising event of the year and our first meeting will be held in early December.

In closing, Kaye MacDonald presented Jean Colling and Elaine Pollock with lovely red poinsettia plants in recognition of their past roles.

Jean Colling has looked after our money for the past eight years and has handed over the purse strings to Wilma Manary.

Elaine Pollock has kept the membership records up-to-date and dutifully collected the membership dues for the past seven years. Loreen Ambler has taken over this position and many thanks to Wilma and Loreen for taking on these responsibilities.
