In memory of the 14 young women killed on December 6, 1989 in Montreal at the École Polytechnique and to raise awareness of violence against women and children, more than 30 people gathered at the Coulter Parkette in Port Elgin. In 1991, the Parliament of Canada officially designated December 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
Cheryl Kryzaniwsky and Pat Coulthart of the Canadian Federation of University Women, South-port Chapter Kry told the group that 51 per cent of women in Canada have experienced either physical or sexual abuse and that the problem has increased in Bruce and Grey counties.
Author, journalist and cyclist, Laura Robinson Robinson spoke in particular to the issue of First Nations women and the many in British Columbia that simply appeared to fall off the radar when they were killed.
