The South-port Optimist Club initiated the first annual Christmas 'Shop with a Cop' for the local Food Bank.

The project involved eight students from the four local elementary schools, local police officers and Optimist club members.  The Optimist club donated $400 to the teams who had to compete in a shopping spree for the Food Bank.

Two students from each school shopped with a police officer and an Optimist Club member and, as a team they had to fill their carts with non-perishable items that would feed a family of four.  The team that came closest to a $100 total at the till, would win an additional gift card for the Food Bank donated by Legault's Independent Grocer.

"We hope this will give students an appreciation of what it is to shop on a strict budget," said organizer, Optimist President, Brenda Vanderploeg.  "The students selected were also part of the D.A.R.E. program (drug awareness) and they are exemplary representatives of their schools."

It was a fun experience that taught all involved how to shop for the best values!
