Diane Thorne, right, volunteer with Salvation Army Family services in Port Elgin, accepts a $5,833 cheque from Melanie Cooper, of Bruce Power. The money will be used towards the Salvation Army’s hamper program, which supports 137 local families, as well as to purchase food for its food bank.

Bruce Power is donating $78,000 to help ensure local families in need have their cupboards stacked and presents under the tree this holiday season.

The company is donating $65,000 to 18 local food banks and $13,000 to Christmas Hamper programs in the area, in addition to hundreds of toys being donated in an employee-driven toy collection.

“Food banks are vital to so many people in our region, especially during these difficult economic times,” said Duncan Hawthorne, Bruce Power President and CEO. “Bruce Power recognizes how difficult it can be for these non-profit organizations to keep their shelves stocked, especially during the holiday season, so we felt it was important to continue our tradition of supporting these essential services.”

Food banks receiving a cash donation are Beaver Valley Outreach (Thornbury), Cedarside Baptist Church (Flesherton), Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, Durham and District Food Bank, Goderich Salvation Army Food Bank, Golden Town Outreach (Meaford), Hanover Salvation Army Food Bank, Immanuel Evangelical Church (Paisley), Kincardine Food Bank, Lion’s Head and District Food Bank, Markdale District Food Bank, Owen Sound Salvation Army Food Bank, Salvation Army Family Port Elgin, Saugeen First Nation, St. Vincent de Paul Society (Port Elgin), Tobermory Food Bank, Walkerton and District Food Bank, and Wiarton Salvation Army Food Bank.

The annual site-wide toy drive, which collects hundreds of gifts for local children and is organized and supported by Bruce Power employees, is also wrapping up this week. Local Christmas Hamper programs benefitting from the generosity of Bruce Power employees include those in Chesley, Paisley, Kincardine, Ripley, and Tiverton, as well as Bruce County Ontario Works, Bruce County Social Services (Walkerton), Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey (Kincardine), and the Port Elgin Salvation Army, IOTA PHI. In addition, Bruce Power is donating $13,000 to other Hamper programs, including Mwikewedong Native Centre, Children’s Aid Society of Owen Sound, Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, Saugeen First Nations, Bruce County Social Services, and the Bruce Children are Special Foundation.
