Blue Water School Board of Trustees elect new Chair & Vice Chair

Blue Water District School Board (BWDSB) Trustees elected a new Chair and Vice-Chair at its Tuesday night meeting (Dec. 6)

Jan Johnstone, trustee representing the Municipality of Kincardine and Huron-Kinloss Township was elected Chair defeating former Chair, Marg Gavillier Trustee of Owen Sound, who served for one year as Chair.

Fran Morgan, Trustee for the Municipality of Meaford and The Blue Mountain, nominated veteran Trustee Johnstone for Chair lauding her qualities of " ... integrity, passion, intellect, experience and an inherent understand of board protocols."

While former Chair, Marg Galliver, Trustee of Owen Sound, vied for a second term as chair, Johnstone was elected by written ballot .

"I see the role of the Chair as setting the tone of the Board and how Trustees treat each other" said Johnstone prior to her win.  "The Chair has to both listen and lead and be fair and be able to unite the board."  With 10 years' experience as Trustee, Johnstone has chaired several committees within the board and has been a member on many others. 

"We have a unique rural voice," she added, "and we have to work as a team, be inclusive and treat our staff, our students, our parents and each other with respect."

Jim Dawson elected Vice-Chair

Trustee of Saugeen Shores and Aaran Elderslie, Kevin Larson, nominated Jim Dawson, Trustee of Southgate Townships and Municipality of Grey Highlands.

Dawson was acclaimed Vice-Chair, after Trustee Terry Bell declined to stand after being nominated, and after John Chapman stepped down after serving for three years in the position.

"One year ago, we were a new board," said Dawson, "and I would like to congratulate my fellow Trustees for accomplishing much, but there is still much to be done.  I believe my past experience in education brings a wealth o fknowledge to the table.  In the coming year, there will many challenges and I look forward to working with staff, our new Chair and the board."
