The Wolves picked up two much-needed wins on the weekend, beating Lucknow Friday night, 5-2; and Walkerton, 8-2, Saturday night. After a couple of bad weeks, the Wolves have managed to string together a three-game winning streak, bumping them into fourth place, just two points ahead of the Shelburne Muskies who do have a couple of games in hand, though. Friday night saw another rough installment of the long-running battle between the Wolves and their cross-township rivals, the Lucknow Lancers. It’s never hard to get pumped up to play Lucknow and this game was another one for the history books as it had no shortage of goals, fights or testosterone for that matter. Lucknow took the lead half-way through the first and managed to hit the dressing rooms with a 1-0 lead. The Wolves seemed a bit lost at times during the first period - the passes were not getting through and the shots were just a little wide. Assistant coach Mark Stanley’s first-intermission speech must have sparked the boys because they came out flying in the second determined to not give away two points to their main rivals. Three goals in the second period, highlighted by a beautiful marker, with one second remaining, by Mark Stanley (the younger Mark), gave the Wolves a 3-1 lead going into the third period. Two more goals in the third for the Wolves capped off the final 5-2 score. The final last minutes of the third period were interesting as the two teams decided to solve their differences using their fists. Ripley was sticking up for a teammate after a few shots had been taken at Wolves player Travis VanGaver earlier in the game. In the end, no one was hurt and the Wolves showed that they are not going to be intimidated. A quick get well goes out to Wolves announcer Ross Farrell, who while doing his duties, caught a stray puck just above the eye during the first period. Hope the headache is gone and you are feeling better soon, Ross. Ripley goal scorers against Lucknow were: Jeremy McQuillin, Travis VanGaver, Mark Stanley, Justin Stanley and Nick Locking. Picking up assists were: Mark Stanley, Kurt Edwards, Jeremy McQuillin, Nick Locking, with Corey McCrae and Devin Kemp each picking up a pair. Kurt Edwards stopped 34 of 36 shorts to get the win in net for the Wolves. The Walkerton Capitals came to town Saturday night hoping to avenge a loss to the Wolves earlier in the season. It was going to be a tough go as the Caps had only had 10 skaters make the trip and this is a tough league to win in, even if you have a full bench, let alone only two lines. Goal scorers against Walkerton were: Nick Locking with two and singles going to Darrin MacDonald, Kyle Wreford, Travis VanGaver, Corey McCrae, Mark Stanley and Chad Colling. Earning assists were: Nick Locking with three, Jeremy McQuillin, Darrin MacDonald, Corey McCrae, Mark Stanley and Derek Regier each with two, and singles to Travis VanGaver, Devin Kemp and Chad Colling. Kurt Edwards was in net once again and stopped 29 of 31 shots to pick up the win. A few weeks ago, I jokingly told Corey McCrae, who was selling his house at the time, that if he dropped the price $10,000, I would give him $500 for every point he gets this year on top of the asking price. He laughed and said that’s a good deal for me as he doesn’t get many points. This weekend would have cost me an extra $2500 as Corey racked up a goal and four assists. I’m glad we didn’t make the deal. Ripley skates over to Durham this Friday night for a tilt with the Thundercats - if you are up for a drive, the puck drops at 8:30 p.m.. The next home game for the Wolves is Friday, Dec. 16, at 8:30 p.m. against the Shallow Lake Crushers. Hope to see you out at the game!
