It was a major day of awareness Wednesday (Nov. 30), as Kincardine District Secondary School students marked the end of "Movember," and a large group took the "Vow of Silence."

"Movember" is a public awareness campaign about prostate cancer in men. Students and staff, male and female, sported moustaches in support of the cause.

Also, for 24 hours, about 30 students took the "Vow of Silence" in support of children's rights and the Free The Children organization.

Around the world, children are silenced because they are denied the right to education, forced to work as child labourers, or made sick because the water they drink is contaminated with bacteria.

Participants in the "Vow of Silence" agreed to be silent in support of the millions of children worldwide who are subjected to exploitation, poverty and the denial of their basic rights.

The group of students also raised money through pledges for the "Vow of Silence." These funds go toward the Free The Children Vow of Silence Campaign which supports development projects and gives marginalized children around the world hope for a better future.

Last year, 102,493 youth took the "Vow of Silence" in 57 countries around the world.
