Dear Editor,

I would like to draw attention to a wonderful young woman who is an active member of our community with outstanding leadership skills.

This individual continually gives her time, energy and enthusiasm to many good causes. She is a mentor to our young and an inspiration to adults. Her name is Erin Peister and she is currently completing her fourth year in concurrent education at Brock University and will graduate as a primary school teacher.

I have known Erin since she was a child attending Elgin Market Public School. I watched her grow into a vibrant young woman who spends much of her free time helping others. Erin has always demonstrated her generosity and caring whether it be as a leader at the Davidson Centre Summer Playground Program, as regular supporter of the Terry Fox Run or as a volunteer in the classroom at our local schools.

Many children in Kincardine, including my own, have been influenced by knowing Erin. She is a motivated leader who wishes to spend her career educating children and inspiring change in the world. She is passionate about her desire to make a difference.

Throughout her high school education at Kincardine District Secondary School and currently at university, Erin has been an active ambassador for “Free the Children” - the world’s largest organization of children helping children through education. Free the Children has benefited 45 countries with over one million youth involved in making a difference in the world.

This fall, Erin was fortunate enough to volunteer at “We Day” held in Toronto at the Air Canada Centre. This is an annual event organized by “Me to We” (part of Free the Children) for elementary and high school students.

This particular program inspires youth to recognize their full potential through leadership, education and motivation. This was a fantastic opportunity that resulted in Erin volunteering to participate in a trip of a lifetime. She will be travelling to Kenya with “Me to We” in the spring of 2012 for three weeks.

While in Kenya, she will work with a team of 25 other individuals who are passionate about making a difference in the world. Together, they will work on building a school, interacting with children and community members, teaching in a classroom, and working on a “Free the Children” development project, all while illustrating that youth have the power to make a difference in the world.

The cost of participating in this exciting “Me to We Volunteer and Leadership” trip is $5,000. Erin is committed to investing her own money to ensure that she does not miss out on this valuable experience.

It would be wonderful if our community could support Erin in this endeavour. Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation or wishing to offer a financial sponsorship, it would be greatly appreciated. No amount is too small. As a future teacher, Erin will participate in an amazing educational experience that she would be honoured to share with our community.

Those who would like to make a donation or learn more about this organization, are encouraged to contact Erin at 519-396-7923 or by E-mail: epeister_19@yahoo.ca

Erin is now home for her Christmas break and would be happy to answer any questions about her upcoming trip to Kenya.

Sincerely yours,
Jane C. Benney
