I would like to respond to the letter of Dec 14 concerning the DGR proposal.
I fully understand everyone's opposition to this proposal, but that said there are always two sides to every story.
As a long time resident of Southampton I have and do benefit from Bruce power, as do many organizations of this community. Bruce Power has been instrumental in many areas of support for ours and other surrounding communities. Without their help in many charities and building projects, many would not have come to pass. Their community support is unending and given happily.
The fact is that we DO have a nuclear plant in our backyard. We have helped to create the problem, how can we ask other areas to clean up our waste from something that we benefit from and are so willing to accept their community financial support.
We are a nuclear community and for that fact alone we should be well aware of the pros and cons of nuclear development in the area. Our children have grown up with nuclear. It is second nature to us now. We should know that there are many, many, unknown variants that need to be discussed and made known before we pass judgement on any proposal.
There is always an element of danger or catastrophic events. We cannot live our lives in fear. Right now nuclear plants are storing used fuel bundles in dry storage units, ( the bundles are encased in steel and concrete, to my knowledge) They are above ground and are here now. The wet storage area for spent fuel bundles is short term, and they are running out of space. That in itself poses risk.
My question to you is, what would you prefer? Something above ground, that could remotely, also rupture ( highly unlikely ) in the event of a natural disaster in the area. Or something much more secure, thousands of feet below ground in a more secure storage environment.
Both are very frightening concepts. Mayor Mike Smith has put this before us as a viable option in the future, only. We may not even make the list. Lets not put the cart before the horse. In my opinion I think we need to keep an open mind and get all the facts before we jump to conclusions and cause unneeded fear in the community.
