The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks remain the WOAA's only undefeated team as they skated to a 6-2 win over rival Elora Rocks on Friday night. The game started out slow with both teams struggling to find some momentum. It wasn't until the 14:19 mark of the 1st period that the scoreless tie was broken when Brent MacDermid slid the puck past Elora goaltender Blake Sinclair to make it 1-0 for the home side.
The 'Hawks picked up a late powerplay but weren't able to capitalize and had to settle for a 1-0 lead after the 1st period.
The Winterhawks came out like a team possessed in the 2nd period and quickly established a two-goal lead when Darryl McKinnon converted a 2-on-1 with MacDermid just 1:51 into the 2nd.
MacDermid then solidified his claim as the Crabby Joe's Player of the Game with his second goal and third point of the night when he blasted a one-timer from Jeff Young past Sinclair to make it 3-0 for the 'Hawks.
Elora managed to get on the board midway through the 2nd, however. With captain Greg Thede off for interference, the Rocks Ryan DeBoer beat Andrew Smith for the powerplay to cut the 'Hawks lead to 3-1.
The score remained 3-1 as the teams headed off for the 2nd intermission.
Any talk of an Elora comeback was quickly put to rest in the 3rd period when the 'Hawks struck twice in a matter of seconds.
Curtis Johnston used a feed from Shawn Walker to put the 'Hawks up 4-1 just 4:13 into the 3rd period and then Greg Virgo added his own marker just 37 seconds later to make it 5-1.
Johnston added his second of the game just four minutes later to make it 6-1, while Elora would add another goal but it was too little, too late as the 'Hawks improved their league-best record to 16-0-0 with the 6-2 win.
