Nothing in Kincardine is ever officially open until the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band marches through the door.

It was the same for the 25th annual Kincardine Regional Silver Stick hockey tournament which began Tuesday morning (Dec. 27), but the opening ceremonies weren't held until Tuesday evening at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine.

Kincardine Scottish pipers and drummers marched in the dignitaries, including tournament director Lyle Brock, Kincardine mayor Larry Kraemer, Kincardine Crabby Joe's Tap and Grill owner Ian Cumming and the restaurant's Crabby Joe mascot. "Crabby Joe" later dropped the puck for the game between the Kincardine and Hanover Bantams.

Ainslie Martyn opened the ceremonies with the singing of "O Canada."

Brock thanked all the players, parents, coaches and sponsors for supporting the Silver Stick tournament. A total of 48 teams is participating, with 16 each in Novice, Pee Wee, and Bantam, in "B" and "C" divisions. Brock also thanked the volunteers and staff, including the referees.

"I encourage the participants to play the game in the true Silver Stick spirit," he said. "Play hard, play fair, and promote good sportsmanship. Have fun and enjoy the experience."

In Tuesday results:

Novices - Mount Forest downed Goderich, 4-1, Listowel beat BCH, 3-1, Ripley tied Shallow lake, 3-3, Dundalk blanked Flesherton, 3-0, BCH edged Goderich, 3-2, Kincardine defeated Listowel, 6-1, and Dundalk beat Ripley, 3-2.

Pee Wees - Seaforth downed Wingham, 3-1, Mildmay beat TCDMHA, 4-1, Listowel blanked Hanover, 5-0, and Goderich edged Kincardine, 2-1.

Bantams - Listowel downed South Huron, 7-2, BCH defeated Erin Hillsburgh, 5-2, TCDMHA blanked Seaforth, 2-0, Blyth-Brussels dumped Flesherton, 6-0, BCH edged South Huron, 3-2, Listowel beat Erin-Hillsburgh, 1-0, and TCDMHA defeated Flesherton, 3-1.

The tournament runs all week, with games in Kincardine, Tiverton and Ripley. All final games will be played in Kincardine Friday, Dec. 30.
