Huron-Kinloss council is moving into the technical age.

At the general committee meeting yesterday (Jan. 9), council agreed to purchase five laptops and four tablets from MTC Computers in Kincardine.

Training on this new equipment and the new electronic agenda format, is set for Feb. 6's general committee meeting, said clerk Sonya Watson.

A request for quotes resulted in five tenders (all prices include tax):

  • GenX Solutions of Toronto, $5,264.60
  • Ederick Associates Inc. of Mississauga, $5,802.55
  • MTC Computers of Kincardine, $6,792.43
  • SHI International Corp., London and Toronto, $7,277.20
  • Microcad, distributor servicing Canada, $7,050.07

MTC Computers was not the lowest quote, but in her report, Watson stated that the company has been the township's Information Technology (IT) service provider for a number of years and is very familiar with the Huron-Kinloss network and its hardware requirements.

"MTC is a local supplier and we are confident in the service this company provides," wrote Watson, in her report. "There will be a significant amount of time required to have the PCs initialized and loaded with anti-virus software. MTC has indicated this set-up will be included in the quote for the council laptops and tablets."

She added that the two HP business model laptops that MTC quoted for staff are of a higher quality than the Acer or Fujitsu quoted by the competitors, and offer significantly higher specifications and faster processing time for staff use.

Watson said another benefit for going with a local company is that if something goes wrong with the units, MTC Computers has always been good to provide loaners and rectify hardware problems for the township.

"The added cost in the quote from MTC Computers is well worth the additional set-up and service MTC will provide," wrote Watson.

Council agreed. Final approval will come forward at the Jan. 16 council meeting.
