Eight communities across Canada have put their names forward to host a new Deep Geologic Repository (DGR) for high-level nuclear waste. Saugeen Shores is one of them, and now Huron-Kinloss Township is considering whether to also venture into the fray. At the Dec. 19 council meeting, mayor Mitch Twolan asked council if it was interested in finding out more information about the subject. Already, Kincardine is going through the process to host a DGR for low- and intermediate-level nuclear waste at the Bruce Nuclear site. "As a neighbouring community, we're going to be impacted," said Twolan, pointing to Kincardine and Saugeen Shores. He said an educational briefing session with staff from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) could be arranged in order to get more information about the site selection process for a used-fuel waste facility. NWMO is in charge of finding a permanent site for used-fuel storage. The process, itself, is a comprehensive multi-stage exercise, said Twolan, which will take a number of years to complete. The goal is to select, according to a very stringent criterion, a willing host community which will see the investment of a multi-billion-dollar project to construct and maintain a facility to manage used nuclear fuel over the long-term. "It's important that we learn as much as possible about this," said Twolan. "We need to be educated about what's going on. Let's have the discussion and look at possible opportunities."

He said NWMO staff could come to a township council meeting and explain the process. Councillor Jim Hanna said the township is in a seismic-zero area. The ground is very stable and would be a good place to locate the used-fuel DGR. "Plus, we would have a little say in what happens," said Twolan. "Unlike the Green Energy Act which was jammed down our throats." Scrolling stops when you move your mouse inside the scroll area. You can click on the ads for more
