The proposed 2012 budget for the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA), has decreased by about one per cent. However, the levies on member municipalities have increased, some significantly. The draft budget was discussed at the Dec. 21 Kincardine council meeting. The document shows that the SVCA cut its budget by $33,650, to $3,592,265 for 2012, but the general levy has increased by $123,630, to $1,497,081 in 2012. Kincardine and Saugeen Shores have the largest increases, based on assessment, while other municipalities have smaller increases or have little property in the Saugeen Watershed. Kincardine's levy will be hiked by $21,063, to $277,819 next year; Saugeen Shores will see an increase of $32,617, to $324,972. Other hikes in levy go to:
Councillor Ron Coristine, one of Kincardine's representatives on the SVCA, said there was substantial pressure on this year's budget, including wages, aging infrastructure, and non-revenue-producing parks such as Stoney Island. "The board worked hard to bring in this budget," he said. "Many of the subsidies from the province have decreased, so the general levy has to increase to fill the gap."

Councillor
Mike Leggett, also on the SVCA, said the levy is based on assessment,
so if Kincardine's assessment ever goes down, then it's levy would go
down. The budget goes to the SVCA board of directors for approval Feb. 16, 2012. Scrolling stops when you move your mouse inside the scroll area. You can click on the ads for more
