A piece of Kincardine's history has been torn down to make way for a four-storey, 27-unit apartment building on Huron Terrace in the former Town of Kincardine.

The old Gym Bags building at 952 Huron Terrace was dismantled in mid-December.

It had been a full-service health and fitness facility since 1982.

The east side of the building, closest to the street, was originally the Roman Catholic Church, dedicated in 1950. It served that purpose until Jan. 15, 1984, when the new St. Anthony's Church on Russell Street was dedicated.

The proposed apartment complex has faced some opposition from the neighbours who believe it is too intense a project for this single-family-dwelling neighbourhood.

Cuesta Planning Consultants, speaking on behalf of applicants Troy and Amy Snobelen, has agreed to take the concerns from the residents and ensure they are addressed before bringing another report to Kincardine council in the new year.
