Survey results show a definite need for a grocery store in downtown Kincardine.

Conducted by the Kincardine Business Improvement Area (BIA), the survey was done in response to Sobeys' announcement earlier this year that it is closing the Foodland store on Queen Street, in March, 2012.

Rick Clarke, downtown development manager, told council Dec. 21, that the BIA is working with the property owner to bring a retail tenant to that building.

He said a community petition, "Save Our Downtown Grocery Store," conducted by Marilyn Starr, resulted in 849 signatures.

"That's a strong voice for a grocery store in downtown Kincardine," said Clarke.

The BIA's own survey saw 205 responses, and of those, 94 per cent said a grocery store is essential for the downtown.

Of the respondents, 40 per cent said they shop at the downtown grocery store more than eight times per month, and the average spent is $62.45 per week.

Clarke said there is no confirmation that Giant Tiger, a general department store that also sells groceries, is looking at the property.

"There is interest in the 18,000-square-foot building," said Clarke, "and the owner is apparently looking for retailers."

"Thank you for your tireless efforts in support of the health and vitality of the downtown core," said councillor Jacqueline Faubert.

She noted that one of the main weaknesses in the downtown, as indicated in earlier BIA studies, is dilapidated buildings and vacant storefronts.

Council thanked Clarke for the update.
