While volunteers provide much needed services, it is also recognized as one of the most self-satisfying ways of giving back to a community.

Home & Community Support Service in Bruce County often ask for the help of volunteers and, now in Southampton, the call is going out again.

"We need drivers who can donate a very small amount of time," says Jane Hoffstetter, Team Leader in Saugeen Shores and Kincardine, "for much-needed services."

The Day Away Program located at Southampton Memorial Hospital provides social activities such as card games, board games such as dominoes and crafts in addition to listening and exercising to music or simply sitting and taking part in conversation.

At several locations in Bruce County, the program provides an atmosphere of social activities, recreation and overall fun.

"Our visitors to the Day Away program have a wonderful time," says Hofstetter.  "Caregivers or volunteers bring Seniors to the Day Away locations where they have a full day of conversation, activities and a hot meal."

The program not only gives participants that chance to socialize, it also offers caregivers a day of respite.

The time needed twice a week is very small and only requires providing a short drive from home to hospital.

In addition, hot 'meals on wheels' provides a hot daily meal for those who are unable to cook for themselves or who are unable to shop for groceries due to a number of reasons, including no driver's license, surgery recovery and others conditions.
