The 30th annual Port Elgin Superspiel weekend with 16 teams all came down to a re-match between two rinks ... the Wayne Tuck and Peter Mellor teams.

The two had played off before and, this year, was no different except ... the Mellor team won for the first time the $5,000 prize with the Tuck rink winning the second prize of  $2,650.

It was a close final match that saw the the two teams bounce back and forth in scoring until the final end when it counted and the Mellor team pulled through to win the fina 7 to 5.

With the changing times of Ontario curling however, the timing of cash bonspiels is increasingly important.

As curling is gaining in popularity, largely because of the Olympics and television coverage, major bonspiels are becoming very popular with high calibre teams.  Many of these teams use the bonspiels as practice events before major Ontario play-down events.  The play-downs are now starting earlier in the curling season and, therefore, most teams are searching for bonspiels earlier in the season.

Given the many time conflicts, Superspiel 31 for the first time, will be moving to the Fall of 2012.  Port Elgin is planning for a November spiel.  Stay tuned.
