Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson was pleased to learn that the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) has urged the provincial government to suspend all industrial wind developments until serious shortcomings can be fixed.

The OFA has said the development of industrial wind turbines are pitting rural residents against each other, and members have told federation representatives about the health risks associated with wind turbines, their concerns over the loss of farmland and the economic risk to properties. The OFA also expressed its concerns over the Feed-in Tariff program—the price paid out for power.

We’ve got evidence that turbines trigger health problems, our energy prices are skyrocketing, and we’re excluding local communities from the decision-making process,” said Thompson. “We are seeing inefficiencies with the pricing for wind power, concerns over the setbacks, health and environmental risks, and concerns over property values, and I am pleased to see the OFA bring its important voice to the table.”

Thompson supports the OFA’s call for a moratorium on wind projects until the interests of rural communities are better protected, and shares its concern of the lack of municipal control in industrial wind projects. In December, the Liberal government voted against a Progressive Conservative private member's bill that would return the planning power for industrial wind turbine projects back to municipalities.

In December, Thompson tabled a motion in the Ontario Legislature calling for a moratorium on all industrial wind projects until a third-party health and environmental study can be completed.

The Liberal government moved forward with these projects so quickly that we don’t know the exact health and environmental risks that wind turbines pose,” said Thompson. “I am pleased to stand next to the OFA and echo its calls for a suspension of wind development until we know the risks associated.”
