For the next 14 weeks, nine second-year Practical Nursing students and a clinical instructor from Georgian College will spend two days per week at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre – Kincardine hospital site. The students will apply their skills in the inpatient unit, with tasks such as complex dressings, removal of sutures and staples, tube feedings, administering medications and injections, and glucometer readings. Observation exercises will be completed in other departments, including Diagnostic Imaging and Specialist Clinics. “Our staff is very supportive and generous with its time and expertise as it mentors the next generation of nurses,” says Kate Kincaid, director of patient care at the Kincardine hospital. “Exercises such as this are very beneficial to the students as well as the hospital. Recruiting nurses is becoming increasingly challenging; it is our hope that the group enjoys its time with us and we may see some of these nurses return in the future.”
