Guest speaker at the January meeting of the Reid’s Corners Women’s Institute was Lucy Gowers, community development co-ordinator for the Parkinson Society of Grey-Bruce, an organization formed four years ago. Parkinson’s is a disorder of the brain. Movement is controlled by dopamine, a chemical that carries signals between nerves in the brain. When cells that produce dopamine die or are damaged, Parkinson’s symptoms appear. So far, there is no cure but hopes are high. In Canada, 150,000 people suffer from Parkinson Disease. In the world, more than six million have Parkinson’s. It affects each patient differently. There is no remission stage. Gowers is passionate about her job and urges all those afflicted with Parkinson’s to reach out for help. Support groups are available in many centres, including Kincardine. For more information, contact Gowers at lucy.gowers@parkinsonsociety.ca . The guest speaker was introduced by convener Loreen Ambler and thanked by Bonnie Cole. President Judy Snobelen conducted the business portion of the meeting. The next meeting will be under the direction of Tweedsmuir History convener Ruth Anne Robinson. She asked that each member bring a family history picture, label it and tell about it. These pictures will be copied to go in the Tweedsmuir History book. A delicious lunch was served by Nancy Copeland and Judy Snobelen
