The lack of snow this winter has been great for travellers, but not so good for outdoor enthusiasts who want to ski, snowshoe and enjoy other winter sports. At Stoney Island Crescent, Kincardine, the outdoor skating rink finally froze and the youngsters, Spencer and Matt Walton and Drae and Ko Parcy, were outside playing hockey on the weekend. Larry Walton says he and his neighbour, Matt Willsack, built the 30-foot-by-65-foot rink in November and it was a long wait before it could be used. "This past weekend, the temperatures at night finally hit negative double-digits and froze the rink solid," says Walton. "The rink attendant(s) worked nights and weekends to create the rink. We did it, because it's so Canadian!" The Kincardine Cross-Country Ski Club was excited to see snow. Saturday, several club members opened the new snowshoe trail at Stoney Island Conservation Area, north of Kincardine. And, the 3rd Kincardine Girl Guides travelled to Camp Wyoka, just outside Clifford, for some winter camping Jan. 13-15. The theme was Winter Adventure Camp. The girls stayed in Carlyle Lodge, and enjoyed many activities, including snowshoeing, hiking, stargazing, tobogganing and zip-lining. The meals were great, with the help of Stephanie Hartwick who volunteered to join the Guides for this event. Way to go, girls!
