Having Kincardine featured on a major fishing show is a novel idea, but Kincardine council is not totally in favour of the promotion, given the hefty price tag.

In committee-of-the-whole Wednesday night (Jan. 11), mayor Larry Kraemer brought forward the proposal on behalf of Jim Hoey of "The Dimestore Fishermen" television program.

In an E-mail message to Kraemer, Hoey said the program's producers would like to film a feature episode in 2012, preferably in May at the Fish Kincardine Derby, or in July at the Chantry Chinook Salmon Derby.

"The Dimestore Fisherman provides a focus on exposing great Canadian fishing destinations to an international viewing audience while focusing on the cultural, historical and recreational aspects of the region or municipality that we are visiting," said Hoey.

He said the program has a large domestic and international viewing audience. The Canadian market includes four national broadcasters and the program also airs on Shaw, the largest distributor of cable in Canada, as a unique free video-on-demand program.

"We enjoy a national broadcast three times weekly on Wild TV, on Shaw, Rogers, Bell Express Vu and Star Choice," said Hoey. "The program also broadcasts nationally in Canada with NTV Canada's Superstation and Newcap TV (a CTV affiliate)."

The fee for The Dimestore Fishermen to come to Kincardine for a four-day shot is $11,900 plus GST, Hoey said, as well as accommodation, food and guided fishing for the duration of the time at the location.

The crew would be in Kincardine for six nights and five days - fishing for two days, and filming in the community for three days including scenics and other segment content for the program, Hoey said. The feature episode would broadcast 18-20 times in six months in North America.

In addition, Kincardine would receive a five- to seven-minute high-definition tourism promotion video disc (DVD), said Hoey.

Kraemer showed council a video promotion of Rice Lake, Ontario, featured on The Dimestore Fishermen website. That video included testimonials with anglers, history of the area, and some successful fishing.

"It's a novel idea," said councillor Kenneth Craig. "It would give Kincardine great exposure and it is good value as a marketing tool. We should try hard to include it in this year's budget."

Councillor Jacqueline Faubert was more cautious, asking if the proposal is for an actual TV episode or just an advertisement.

"It's a half-hour TV episode," said Kraemer. "They would come here and visit for a week, do some fishing, tour the community and then put together an episode and we would get a promotional DVD to keep."

"I would like to see a half-hour episode that they have produced," said Faubert. "We have talented videographers here who could do this work for us. However, I agree the exposure (on the TV program) would be good. We should also consult with the fish derby committee and the Kincardine and District Chamber of Commerce about this idea."

In addition, she suggested contacting the Rice Lake Tourist Association for its opinion about this proposal. "We can do a lot of tourism with $15,000."

"I don't fish and I've never heard of The Dimestore Fishermen in my life," said councillor Randy Roppel. "They're also asking for accommodation, food and guided fishing tours? And we get a DVD that's five to seven minutes long. It seems a bit pricey."

He said he spoke to a local fisherman who watches all the fishing shows, and asked if he had heard of The Dimestore Fishermen. "He said not to waste your money on that show."

Council agreed to forward any concerns and comments to the mayor who will convey them to Hoey.
