Thanks to many local 'knitters', Saugeen Shores' Special Olympians are off  to the National Games in Alberta in style in their 'Olympic Scarves'.

More than 650 Special Olympics athletes will travel to St. Albert and Jasper, Alberta for the 2012 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games being held from February 28 to March 3.

There are eight local athletes in all who will be attending - five curlers include Jeremy Kranenburg, Wayne Morton, Terri Johnston, Reta McCourt and Jason Scott; speed skater Brady Conley; Nordic Skiier Aynsley Kemila and snowshoe competitor, Cindy Collins.

The Special Olympics organization put out a national request for 2500 scarves to be made for the athletes, their families, supporters, coaches and volunteers in the powder blue, white and red colour combination of the games.

Spearheaded by Terri Plaunt in Saugeen Shores, several knitters, including one gentleman Marshall McMillan, stepped in to take up the challenge, knitting more than 50 scarves, each unique in design.

The knitters involved were:  Rosemary Crawford, Leanne Acernese, Lois Mark, Mary Smith, Lisa Meadows, Linda Palinkski, Terri Plaunt, Jan McGarry, Margaret Catherwood, Gail Streeter, Nellie |Perry, Heather Pierson, Noreen Limond, Sandy Hutchison, Jeanette Hamilton, Shirley Martin and ...
