A Kincardine woman has been recognized as one of Canada's outstanding principals.

Francine Pilon is principal at Immaculate Conception School in Formosa and has held that post since September, 2008, her first job as principal.

The Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board announced Wednesday that Pilon had won the award.

"We are extremely proud of the excellent work and efforts of our Catholic principals who provide authentic leadership within our schools on a daily basis," said Bruce MacPherson, education director at the board.

"We are very pleased and proud of Francine Pilon who was selected for this prestigious award. This esteemed honour is in recognition of the instructional leadership she actively participates in within the school and throughout our board."

MacPherson said that Pilon demonstrates "faith in action" through her work with staff to provide students with a faith-filled educational experience. The board's virtues of deep caring are evident in all interactions she is involved in with students, staff and community members, he added.

Forty principals from every province and territory are being honoured this year as Canada’s outstanding principals. The program, developed by The Learning Partnership, is in its eighth year.

This year's winners join an exclusive group of about 220 previous recipients of this honour who form the National Academy of Canada's Outstanding Principals.

"We are proud to celebrate the achievements of these extraordinary principals," said Veronica Lacey, president and chief executive officer of The Learning Partnership. "Their dedication to enhancing our public education system clearly demonstrates the importance of strong leadership in education."

The award winners will have the opportunity to further their knowledge and leadership capabilities through the five-day executive leadership program held Feb. 26 to March 1 at the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

The highlight of that week will be the Gala Dinner, Feb. 28, at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto, where the winners will be honoured.

Nominations for Canada's Outstanding Principals were received from every province and territory. They were nominated by their peers, school staff and community members in an extensive nomination and selection process.

The National Selection Committee, a distinguished group of Canadian education, community and private sector leaders, judged the nominees and chose the winners.
