When Goderich needed help, after a tornado ripped through the town last summer, Kincardine was there. For that reason, representatives of the town were at the Kincardine council meeting last night (Feb. 1) to say thank you and to present the "Protecting Tomorrow Today" award to the municipality. "Aug. 21, 2011, saw a dramatic three minutes in the life of Goderich," said Martin Quinn of the Goderich parks department. "It continues to be a major incident in our life." He said thousands of trees came down in the community and there are 30 acres at the cemetery still to be cleaned up. "Aug. 22, calls were made for help, and one of those went to Kincardine," said Quinn. "The first crews to help out after the disaster, were from Kincardine. They came with equipment, trucks, saws, barricades, and more, and they stayed until the work was done. "From the bottom of my heart, and on behalf of every person in the Town of Goderich, we thank you. Yours was a very generous outpouring of support. We can't thank you enough. We've been thanking all the communities that helped us out." Ray Hurd, former Goderich councillor, resident of the town, and president of the Ontario Parks Association, presented the award. "It's my pleasure to make this presentation," he said, "in recognition of your significant contribution to the betterment of parks and the environment through your assistance in the restoration of the Town of Goderich." "If you ever need help," said Quinn, "you can call on us."
