At the recent Saugeen Shores Town Council meeting (Feb. 13), it was reported that members of the town staff and council recently met with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) to "map out the education program" for the public regarding the proposed High Level deep geologic repository (DGR).

The following were considered by the group:

  • a direct mail-out to all households and community groups/organizations

  • direct communication through kiosks

  • at least one NWMO open house in Port Elgin and Southampton

  • a potential NWMO display at the local Home Show in early May

  •  an informational presentation to council at a special meeting (Monday, Apr. 30 - potential)

  • background information to be available on the Town's and NWMO's websites

The 'working group' confirmed that "...the purpose of the communication to take place is education with respect to the overall process, the role of the community and future opportunities for community input" although "direct feedback about the merits of the project would not be sought at this time..."

All of this is prior to proceeding to Step 2 in the site selection process for the High Level DGR.

Currently, the public education and/or comment period regarding The Low and Intermediate waste DGR public education hearing is to be held in late 2012 or early 2013.  According to NWMO and pending approval, "site preparation and construction of the DGR is anticipated to begin in 2014 and take approximately five to seven years to complete.  The earliest the DGR would begin to receive waste is around 2019".
