Sacred Heart School from Teeswater is one of several schools in Bruce and Huron Counties that are learning first-hand what it means to re-stock the rivers and lakes with fish. The Lake Huron Fishing Club (LHFC) has been promoting an initiative to help students understand how fish grow from eggs to hatchlings that are then released.
Parent volunteer Bob Batte netted hatchlings for students Each school in the program was given an aquarium with fertilized Chinook salmon eggs. Students then cared for them after hatching until they reached the hatchling stage when they could be released into the wild. On Monday (Apr. 30), the students of grades 3-4 and 7-8 travelled from Teeswater to Southampton with members of the LHFC. There, they slowly released the hatchlings a few at a time into the Saugeen River near its mouth at Lake Huron.

Once all hatchlings were released, the students then boarded the bus to travel to Port Elgin's fish hatchery where they had the opportunity to see thousands more hatchlings and explore Saugeen Shores' town pond.
